Thecourse was more of an interactive one, and it mainly focused on themajor issues and trends in substance abuse counseling. Throughout thecourse, we were able to understand that drug abuse is a menace thatcauses low productivity, poverty, domestic violence, neglect, anddeath to persons affected. Consequently, it is paramount to considerthe treatment plan that is efficacy and relevant in the working placeor giving service to the society. Additionally, I was able to learnboth the legal and ethical issues that guide the clinicians,especially when handling cases of the most dangerous drug. This wasvery insightful because my intention is to work on the drug andsubstance abuse filed the ethical and legal standards that are setwhen working with clients who have abused substances and drugs areparamount for all learners in this field. Additionally, it is throughthe course that I was able to learn the features that present in asubstance abuse client these include but not limited to insomnia,hallucinations, agitation, nausea, weakness, depression,convolutions, and participation in criminal activities.

Basedon the knowledge I have gained throughout the case, the twosubstances that are commonly abused are alcohol and tobacco.Culturally, some communities promote the use of alcohol in someevents such as taking champagne at the start of a new year or smokingcigar after the birth of a newborn baby. Ethics call for respect forsuch cultures when one is working with such communities however, itis crucial to advise the individuals involved in dangers of abusingsubstances such as risks of addiction and becoming dependencyespecially for women.

Itis through the course that I learned the legal areas in clinician andsubstance abuse counseling. The major legal issues discussed in thecourse include confidentiality, supervisory practices, using informedconsent when handling substance abuse cases, and malpractices thataffect the effectiveness and efficiency of a substance abusecounselor (Rapin,2004).However, there are factors that influence substance abuse such assexual harassment in women and physical assaults this may happenwhen a woman is of age or during their childhood period. As a result,when in my workplace, I will ensure that I examine the main cause ofsubstance abuse in a client this can be done through investigationon whether the patient is depressed, stress, or is havinginterpersonal trauma. These will be guided my counseling competencewhich will be guided by my spirituality and diversity in culture.

Thisis because the reading material clearly indicates that substanceabuse clients are influenced more by an interrogation treatment planthat is based on religious and spirituality. For example, it is easyto convince a client that smoking and binge drinking is not spiritualbecause it negatively correlates with the spirituality as transcendedin the spiritual index. This makes it easy to handle clients who areaffected by substance abuse. Additionally, the course was paramountbecause it does not give room for judging the affected personsrather, it trains the substance abuse counselors on the issues suchas interpersonal trauma that increases the risks of drugs andsubstance abuse disorders this include issues such as dissociation,depression, or impulsive behaviors that are more harmful than thenatural disasters. Lastly, the course is of great help becausetreatment for the substance abuse client is relevant and fits theneeds of the time because people are accessing dangerous drugs andsubstances which include alcohol, tobacco, and other pharmaceuticalmedications that can be dangerous when abused.
